Title: Toll Gate High School Context Report

Introduction:
The Toll Gate High School is a public high school located on 575 Centerville Road in Warwick, Rhode Island in Kent county. Toll Gate offers grades 9 through 12 and has a total of 1191 students and 106 teachers. This context report will show how the school, its community, and district compares with that of the state of Rhode Island as a whole and to the United States. Toll Gate exceeds both Rhode Island and the US in numerous aspects and proves to be an accomplished and great school for students to attend.Parents should feel confident that their children will be receiving a quality education at this high school.
School:
The children at this school are given many options as to the courses to take to the sports offered. "The mission of the Warwick Public Schools, working cooperatively with families and the community, is to provide challenging learning environments that enable all students to develop skills and knowledge necessary to become self-directed, life-long learners, highly productive responsible citizens, and contributors to a technological and diverse society (Warwick Public Schools Mission Statement 2001-2008)."
At this school, 88.7% of students graduate, which is 13% better than the state's 75.3% graduation rate.The student to teacher ratio is 1:8, which is better than the states average ratio of 1 teacher for every 10 students. A large percentage of those 1191 teachers as well as principal and faculty staff believe that it is essential to provide, promote, and practice positive health services. They do this by providing a safe environment and making sure children are knowledgeable on subjects such as drinking, drugs, sex, healthy eating choices. Although the teachers support a healthy environment for their students, a small 45% of teachers that examine student's work to guide and instruct them. (US Census Bureau)
On general education, this school spends $10,048 while the high school average spent is $8,487. They spend a decent amount on their special education department, $36,591, while the state average spent is $22,906. (Information Works) The total amount spent per pupil expenditure is $14,087 per pupil.
At Toll Gate High, only 58% of students receive instruction in writing to improve their skills, while a higher 67% of students are taught problem solving and decision making skills. There are 21% of the students at Toll Gate High School are eligible for the subsidized lunch program. (US Census Bureau) The school is noted for meeting and improving to the NCLB requirements for the second year in a row, according to the 2007 Rhode Island School Scores.
The percentage of suspensions per 100 students enrolled is at 51.5%, 26.1% being out of school suspensions and 25.4% being in school suspensions.There are only 1% of the student population that requires ESL (English as Second Language), while the other 99% of the students are English speaking students. Although only 20% of students decide to take AP tests, 67% of those children score at college level mastery (US Census Bureau). On their NECAP tests, 24 % of students scored proficient in math, 66% in reading, and 30% scored proficient in writing. The school did well on their SAT's overall. Their average scores in math, verbal, and writing all exceeded the state average by a small amount. This school is average in their scores and grades on tests, they meet or barely go above the state average.

Warwick was founded in 1643 by Samuel Gorton, originally named Shawomet. Warwick, Rhode Island appears to be a well-to-do city. The number of families below poverty level in Warwick, 4.3%, is half of what the US' amount of families below poverty level is. Warwick also beats out Rhode Island and the US' median household income, family income, and per capita income by a fairly large amount. The median family income for a family in Warwick is almost $7,000 more than the average Rhode Island family. A very large 80% of parents agree that the community is involved with and supports the school system. (US Census Bureau)
District Summary:
As of 2007, according to the US Census Bureau the population of Warwick is 85,057. In Warwick the races are unevenly distributed. This district has been said to have made "adequate yearly progress." The vast majority of the community is white, at 95.2%. This is a great deal larger than the US percentage of 73.9% and Rhode Island's 85%. The amount of Blacks/African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics are all in the same ball park. A small 1.2 % of the population is black/African American, 1.5% is Asian, and 1.6% is Hispanic. The number of Hispanics in Warwick is significantly lower than that of Hispanics in Rhode Island, 8.7%, and of the US, 12.8% (US Census Bureau).
Of the children in the city, 79.6% of the student population attends public school, 20% attend non-public, and .5% attend public charter schools.
The Warwick district has 26 public schools. An early education center, Drum Rock Early Childhood Center, 17 elementary schools, 3 junior high schools, 3 senior high schools, a Career and Technical Center, and an Adult Education Program (WPS Schools). There are 10,684 students and 1,220 teachers all together in all of the Warwick programs. The total expenditure for all Warwick programs is $150,505,508 while the entire state is $1,813,369,500 on all programs (US Census Bureau). Local funding for schools is at 74%, or 114.7 million dollars, while the state is 23% and federal funding is 5%. All in all, this district cares about education and is puts a good amount of money into their programs which aim to help children succeed. (US Census Bureau)
Conclusion:
The Toll Gate High School and Warwick community and district are all together a successful place for learning. The community and district cares about schooling and gives students a healthy and safe place where they are capable of succeeding. Parents should feel confident in sending their child to this school and knowing they will receive attention from teachers, a variety of opportunities, and courses. According to Information Works, the district and school system is "in need of improvement and making progress."
